A Roman Milestone

by Lady Jane Fairbourn

Anyone who wants to see a Roman milestone can see one at the end of my road. To be honest, it was greatly restored and "improved" by the local council early in the Twentieth century, but the site is right.

We are five miles from Aldgate, on the edge of the City of London, and six miles from the centre of Roman Londinium, on the Roman roads leadin to Colchester abd Norwich. When Kemp lost his bet with Shakespeare and hopped all the way to Norwich, he hopped past the end of my road.

It gives its name to Leytonstone. Leyton is the Town on the Lea. Leytonstone was Leyton atte Stone because of our milestone. It has been in Wanstead for some time. now, to be precise in Snaresbrook Ward of the Borough of Redbridge, because of changes in borough boundaries, but traditionally it marked the beginning of Leytonstone.
