Varjeela

PC, run by Jane Williams

Trader Princess of Issaries (that's "Goldentongue sub-cult Priestess" if you're not into Issaries jargon)

Varjeela doesn't have many secrets, so it's fine for other players to read most of this page. Anything secret is clearly marked like this:Secret!: I can't stop you reading it, but be careful not to tell your characters what you see.

Physical description

Small, slim, quite pretty. Red hair, usually braided. Dresses well without being ostentatious about it. Her staff goes everywhere with her, but she doesn't normally carry any other visible weapons or wear armour. Pavis native, and speaks Pavic with an educated accent.Secret!

Good points

Friendly, genuinely interested in people, and tolerant of all sorts of strange customs. Tries to see the good in everyone, and will do her best to avoid hurting anyone's feelings.

Faults

Well, she's a Goldentongue priestess. Once you start her talking it's quite difficult to stop her. And she prides herself on dealing well with guards, porters, and other hirelings: but she does still regard all of these as underlings for hire, not as equals. Yes, she'll respect their skills and take their advice, but there's no doubt in her mind who's paying the wages.

Numbers

The character sheet is for GM's eyes only, really. But there aren't any secrets here. And the same goes for the equipment list, too.

Family

Varjeela's father Swen is also Pavis-born, the youngest child of Sartarite parents. (Formerly of the Kheldon tribe, they named him after the founder of their tribal city, Swenstown). Swen is a Trader Prince, who travels the dangerous routes through the troll lands of the Dagori Inkarth to Adari and Alone. Varjeela has travelled with him ever since she was old enough to do so, coming back to Pavis for Fire season, when travel is difficult, and for the Sacred Time. Want to see their route? Her mother Narissa came from Tarsh with her parents in 1582 to avoid the fighting when the last attempt to remove Lunar dominance failed. She is also a trader, but has stayed at home since the marriage, bringing up four children and selling the goods (mainly furs and hides) that Swen brings home.

Varjeela is the oldest child, born in 1587 and now 29. Her younger brother Jens, now 26, has recently gained his Mastery in leatherwork, and runs his own shop with the help of his wife and two small children. Her younger sister Briona is 23 and is a seamstress, working for Brygga Scissortongue. Briona hopes to specialise in glove-making someday, but at present is mainly interested in gossip and men. Finally her youngest brother, at 17 and very good-looking, is starting to accompany his father as a guard, much to the dismay of all his female admirers.

History

Varjeela spent her childhood in Pavis. The compulsory militia traiing she received taught her a little of the use of spear and shield (mainly that the shields were too big for her!), and she learnt how to use a sling from her father's troll friends.

Almost Secret! as soon as she was adult, she was initiated into the secrets of Issaries and started accompanying her father on his travels. Her mother insisted that at this point she should join Vinga Secret!as a lay member, just so as to get the protection of a particularly useful spell.

As stated earlier, most of Varjeela's adult life has been spent travelling with her father. While she has friends in Pavis, she has formed no close attachments either at home or on her travels. She was away at the time of the Lunar invasion in 1610 and it had little effect on her (though a handsome young Lunar officer did try to teach her how to use a scimitar once, and bought her a rather nice Shimmer focus).

In 1614 she passed her Mastery exams in Evaluation at the Lhankor Mhy temple, and started to work towards Goldentongue priesthood. She finally managed that a year later, in 1615, and has spent the last year working at the temple "on probation", learning and practising the rituals and spells needed for her to function as a priestess on her own. A few weeks ago she was released from this, and was ready to consider the next stage in her career. It's time for her to strike out on her own; and, while most of her contacts and experience are from the Dagori Inkarth, working there would put her in direct competition with her father. She's looking for opportunities, and the fresh Lunar expansion here, now that they have Sartar under control, may give her an opening.

But first she has taken one of her mother's suggestions. While traveling with her father, they were always abe to afford good guards and plenty of them. Now that she's self-financing, this will no longer be the case: and her own fighting abilities are as yet nothing to write home about. Trader Princes and Princesses have an obligation to protect their followers, so she needs to improve her combat skills fast, and perhaps acquire a bit more protection as well. So she went along to the Vinga temple, and after a bit of training, was initiated. She still isn't used to the red hair (she's naturally dark), and will probably never acquire a very aggressive attitude, but she is a Vingan warrior.
